Our featured song this week is “Better Than I” from the DreamWorks movie Joseph: King of Dreams. Remember, we’ll be bringing you all of March’s songs on Saturday the 30th. In addition to this week’s song you will be getting the links for “Ten Minutes Ago” from Cinderella,On The Street Where You Live” from My Fair Lady, and one more that we’ll tell you about next Saturday.

This song undid me. When we first decided to start releasing songs back in August, Nathan called for some suggestions from friends. Our friend Trevor named this song, with the kind expression that Nathan “would crush it into sweet, melodic dust.” In September we released our homemade recording and were really moved through the process and response. Now we get to do it justice with a higher quality recording, to be sent to you on Saturday, March 30.

I didn’t know this movie and had never heard the song. As soon as I did I was hooked. Anyone could agree that the melody is beautiful, the harmonies embrace you, and the message is one of hope and security in the idea that we don’t have to have everything figured out, and in fact we can’t.

Being known is that weird terrifying quality that we both dread and crave. In this era of thousands of ‘friends’ and so many ways to connect, it’s easy to lose the depth of relationship that is so essential to who we are as humans.

It helps to be reminded that human understanding is not where our search ends. Psalm 139 is the “God-knows-you-better-than-you-know-yourself” chapter. As an element in one of our church services last year, Nathan created a paraphrase of Psalm 139. It seems fitting to share it here:

Psalm 139 – A Poem

by Nathan Bird

Almighty God,
Lord Jesus,
Holy Spirit;
Investigate the crevices of my heart.
You know me more than I know myself.
Everything I think – you know it
Every word that comes from my lips – you hear it
Everything I do – you see it.
I can make myself busy and try to stay away –
but you still know where I am and where I’m going,
If I think I’m going to surprise you with some words…I’m fooling myself.
You hear my heart before I can even take a breath to speak.
I look back on my life and you see your fingerprints all over,
I look up ahead and I see evidence of you, already there,
I look inside myself and there you are, guiding me, pulling me, pushing me –
Holding me.
Wow!
This love;
So overwhelming,
It’s almost too much.
It undoes me – and puts me back together…at the same time!
If I wanted to hide from you… could I?
If I could fly like a bird up into the sky, I’d meet you, soaring with me
If I climbed into the deepest, darkest cave, you’d be there.
Maybe if I jumped outside of time, I’d… Oh wait; nope – you’re there too.
All the limitations of this world are nothing to You,
Day or night You’re there, 24/7, 365 times infinity.
You, the perfect Potter shaped me in my mother’s womb:
You sculpted my heart, and then knit my body together – one cell at a time
Oh Highest God – Breathtaking as a cold breeze on a mountain vista –
Thank you:
For forming me, inside and out with the utmost care and purpose.
I worship You;
I worship for the beauty and grandeur of Your Creation.
You have made me part of Your creation.
You know every word in my story – it’s all laid out for you plain as day.

Sometimes I don’t get You,
You’re literally in a league of your own,
I can’t even try to totally “get” You.
Who can know what God is thinking?
His thoughts, as countless as the sands on the seashore are more rare, and more
beautiful than the largest of diamonds.
Oh God, as the sun rises every morning to touch the earth, let me rise knowing
that YOU have touched MY life
You’ve come to me.
You have loved me, You love me and You won’t quit!
All this garbage in the world – God I hate it. I hate it for you.
Any enemy of you is an enemy of me
Put me on trial, God
Dig into all the hidden places in me:
Lay me bare before you until any sin is painfully obvious before your
righteousness;
Then, again…In your great mercy, issue pardon.
Grant me your friendship
Hold my hand –
Forever

LYRICS of “Better Than I” from the 2000 DreamWorks animated film Joseph: King of Dreams
Words and music by John Bucchino

I thought I did what’s right.

I thought I had the answers.

I thought I chose the surest road, but that road brought me here.

So I put up a fight

And told you how to help me.

Now just when I have given up, the truth is coming clear.

You know better than I, You know the way.

I’ve let go the need to know why, for you know better than I.

If this has been a test,

I cannot see the reason.

But maybe knowing I don’t know is part of getting through.

I try to do what’s best

And faith has made it easy

To see the best thing I can do is put my trust in you

You know better than I, You know the way.

I’ve let go the need to know why, for you know better than I.

I saw one cloud and thought it was the sky.

I saw one bird and thought that I could follow.

But it was you who taught that bird to fly.

If I let you reach me, will you teach me?

You know better than I, You know the way.

I’ve let go the need to know why, for you know better than I.
