Seventy-five years ago today.
On August 15, 1945, Japan surrendered and World War II was finally over. The troops would be coming home!
“It’s Been a Long, Long Time”– was a 1945 hit that sings the perspective of someone welcoming home a soldier.
The war wasn’t even officially over yet when Bing Crosby made his recording of it that July, but by Thanksgiving weekend, this song ranked No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with Kitty Kallen’s version beating Bing there.
Our version is down below.
This history lesson brought to you by the Minnesota State Fair. Sort of.
This year we have the unique situation of having NO FAIR, due to the pandemic.
Of all four pillars of the fair’s goings-ons – Competition, Religion, Education, and Entertainment – education is the most fundamental.
We’re presenting one song for each of these four pillars throughout the month of August.
COMPETITION was “Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)”
RELIGION was “The Lord’s Prayer”
EDUCTION is “It’s Been a Long, Long Time” – along with a history lesson about the long, long time it’s been since we had to cancel our state fair. It has indeed happened – five times before – click here for the run-down.

Take heart, friends. If our people can get through the fair being cancelled for three wars, a World’s Fair, and a different pandemic – we can get through this too!
In the meantime, go find yourself a food truck. Preferably one that sells cheese curds or giant pickles.
And art – make some art, look at some art, buy some art.
(And for goodness sakes, please post bunny pictures and tag them with #SongNotesFromTheBirds – just because.)
